10 Clara Tott was the daughter of Gerhard Tott, who worked for the Augsburg city council. She was lady-in-waiting to Duchess Anna (1420–1474), the second wife of Duke Albert III of Bavaria. At court in Munich, she worked as a singer.
In 1459, there began a love affair with Frederick I, Elector Palatine. They had two sons, who are described as legitimate in various documents, although it is unclear when, exactly, Clara and Frederick married. Some sources say they married in 1462. In any case, the marriage was secret until 1472, when Frederick, the eldest son, wanted a position in the cathedral chapters of Speyer and Worms and needed to prove his descent unambiguously. In 1470, Elector Philip the Sincere had relieved his uncle Frederick I from his promise not to marry in 1470; nevertheless, for reasons of state the whole situation was kept secret.
After Frederick I died in 1479, his successor Philip even held Clara prisoner at Lindenfels Castle for several years, just to keep the situation secret.[1] Contemporary historians describe the situation vaguely and express themselves very carefully, so as to not displease the powerful Palatinate.[citation needed] Later historians have adopted the unclear terminology of their predecessors, even when the issue became less important dynastically and historically[2]
In the 19th century, the historians Johann Ludwig Klüber and August Wilhelm Heffter researched the issue and wrote a very detailed paper, showing on the basis of clear evidence that both sons had been legitimate and that Clara Tott must have descended from a noble family.[3] [4]
Clara Tott was musically talented and had a lasting effect on the musical life at court in Heidelberg. She assisted her husband when he organized the local choir, and induced him to appoint the famous singer Johann Steinwert von Soest as its leader.[5]
Legacy[edit source | editbeta]

A street in Augsburg is named after her.
Issue[edit source | editbeta]

Clara Tott and Elector Frederick I had a happy marriage.[citation needed] They had two sons:
Frederick of Bavaria (1460 – 16 October 1474), a canon in the cathedral chapter in Speyer, and later also in Worms. He died before his father and, like his father, he was buried in the Franciscan church in Heidelberg. His epitaph referred to him as an illegitimate son of the elector. The grave stone, with a portrait of Frederick dressed as a cleric, was still in the church in 1716. It was, however, severely damaged by the French.[6]
Louis of Bavaria (1463-1523). He was raised to imperial count by Emperor Maximilian I on 24 February 1494. His father left him the County of Löwenstein. He was known as Louis of Bavaria and was the founder of House of Löwenstein-Wertheim. His heirs acquired the County of Wertheim and were later raised to princes of the Holy Roman Empire.
Elector Philip ruled until his death on behalf of his nephew and adopted son Philip the Sincere. This may have been the reason why he did not arrange a regular share of his inheritance for his two sons with Clara Tott. They would only be entitled to inherit the Electoral Palatinate if Philip and his sons would die before they did. It the descendants of Philip were to die out, then the most senior member of the Princely House of Löwenstein-Wertheim would inherit.[7][8]

15 Fabian Luzjański (łac. Fabianus Lusianus, niem. Fabian Tetinger von Lossainen, niekiedy też Fabian z Łężan) (ur. ok. 1470 – zm. 30 stycznia 1523 w Lidzbarku Warmińskim) herbu Luzjański – biskup warmiński.
Pochodził z rodziny Merkelingerode, przybyłej w XIV wieku z Harzu do Prus krzyżackich; po nabyciu wsi Lossainen (Łężany) koło Reszla przybrali nazwisko von Lossainen.
Podczas studiów we Włoszech zbliżył się do kręgów humanistów, nawiązał wiele znajomości (m.in. z Mikołajem Kopernikiem, z którym wkrótce razem zasiadał w kapitule warmińskiej).
Około 1510 podjął bliższą współpracę z zakonem, dostarczał kanclerzowi wielkiego mistrza dokumenty świadczące o prawach Krzyżaków do Prus Królewskich.
7 grudnia t.r. zawarty został tzw. układ piotrkowski, regulujący ostatecznie zasady wyboru biskupów warmińskich; wzmocniono gwarancje królewskie, a zarazem ograniczono potencjalne kandydatury do grona kanoników warmińskich z pruskim indygenatem (nie dotyczyło to jedynie członków rodziny królewskiej).

18 He was a son of Louis III, Elector Palatine and his second wife Matilda of Savoy. His maternal grandparents were Amadeo, Prince of Achaea and his wife Catherina of Geneva.
He ruled the Electoral Palatinate after the death of his brother Louis IV as regent for his nephew Philip, Elector Palatine. He adopted his nephew in 1451 and refused to marry. From this "Arrogation," he claimed the right to be the legitimate elector. As this action was against imperial law, Emperor Frederick III refused to confirm Frederick's status. However, the emperor did not manage to displace Frederick who was an able strategist and allied with Louis IX, Duke of Bavaria.
Frederick was also successful against other opponents such as the emperor's party follower Albert III, Elector of Brandenburg and Dieter von Isenburg, the archbishop of Mainz, and increased his territory. With the battle of Seckenheim (1462) during the war of Mainz 1461-1463 Frederick captured his antagonists bishop Georg of Metz, Charles I, Margrave of Baden-Baden and Ulrich V, Count of Wurttemberg.
Marriage and children[edit source | editbeta]

In 1471/1472, Frederick married his long-time mistress Clara Tott. She was a commoner and this was considered a morganatic marriage. They had two children:
Friedrich von Wittelsbach (1461–1474).
Louis I, Count of Löwenstein (29 September 1463 - 1524). Married first Elisabeth von Montfort and secondly Sophia Böcklin. Ancestor of the further rulers of Löwenstein. He was also an eleventh-generation ancestor of Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg, wife of Miguel of Portugal.

26 LUZJAÑSKI, Fabian (ca. 1470-1523)
Birth. Ca. 1470, Królewiec, Poland. Son of Marcin von Lossainen, commandant of the castle and city of Reszel (Ermland) and Elżbieta Kocielecka from the Polish nobility. As a child he was taken hostage by the Teutonic Knights in revenge for his father's defense of Reszel. His last name is also listed as von Lossainen, von Lusian, de Lusian, de Lossainen, from Łęźany, and Tetinger de Lossainensis.

Education. Initial studies probably in Królewiec; studies in Cologne, from 1486; University of Bologna, Bologna from 1490 (doctorate in canon law, May 23, 1500); also studied in Ferrara in 1491.

Early life. Canon of the cathedral chapter of Ermland, 1490; in the chapter he was a colleague of Nikolaus Copernicus, famous astronomer. Legal counselor of Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode of Ermland.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Ermland by its cathedral chapter, April 5, 1512; election confirmed by King Zygmunt Stary of Poland, July 6, 1512; and by the pope August 27, 1512. Consecrated, December 5, 1512, in Piotrków Trybunalski, by Jan Łaski, archbishop of Gniezno and primate of Poland.

Priesthood. Shortly after his election, he was ordained a priest.

Cardinalate. According to some authors (1), he was created cardinal by Pope Adrian VI at the end of 1522 or beginning of 1523. He died shortly after; the cardinal's hat had already been sent to his see but the bishop had died before it reached Lidzbark Warmiñski, the episcopal residence.

Death. January 30, 1523, in Lidzbark Warmiñski. Buried in the cathedral in Frombork.

V 13. a 14. storočí ministeriáli tvorili neoddeliteľnú súčasť nižšej šľachty, v 15. storočí predstavovali jadro nemeckej rytierske triedy (Ritterstand).
